Abducing Rules with Predicate Invention

چکیده
This paper addresses discovery of unknown relations from incomplete network data using abduction. Given a network information such as causal relations and metabolic pathways, we want to infer missing links and nodes in the network to account for observations. This is implemented in SOLAR, an automated deduction system for consequence finding, using first-order representation of algebraic relations and full-clausal ground formulas of network information. Abduction by SOLAR is powerful enough to infer unknown rules and to realize predicate invention by inferring unknown causes. In particular, we point out the importance of existentially quantified formulas to express hypotheses including new variables representing missing nodes to be introduced.

A Soft Version of Predicate Invention Based on Structured Sparsity
In predicate invention (PI), new predicates are introduced into a logical theory, usually by rewriting a group of closely-related rules to use a common invented predicate as a “subroutine”. PI is difficult, since a poorly-chosen invented predicate may lead to error cascades. Here we suggest a “soft” version of predicate invention: instead of explicitly creating new predicates, we implicitly gro...
متن کاملPredicate Invention : A Comprehensive View 1
This paper discusses predicate invention (PI) from various, previously neglected viewpoints. First of all, we argue that predicate invention should build on existing work on constructive induction in propositional learning. We recall the major reasons for constructive induction in propositional languages, and give a brief overview of the frameworks for constructive induction by Matheus, Wnek an...
متن کاملPredicate Invention in Inductive Program Synthesis
In Inductive Logic Programming, predicate invention is the process of introducing a hitherto unknown predicate, and its description, into the description of the currently learned predicate. This is only necessary when a finite axiomatization of the current predicate is otherwise impossible, in which case the description of the invented predicate is recursive. So necessary predicate invention is...
متن کاملPredicate Invention and Learning from Positive Examples Only
Previous bias shift approaches to predicate invention are not applicable to learning from positive examples only, if a complete hypothesis can be found in the given language, as negative examples are required to determine whether new predicates should be invented or not. One approach to this problem is presented, MERLIN 2.0, which is a successor of a system in which predicate invention is guide...
متن کاملRepeat Learning Using Predicate Invention
Most of machine learning is concerned with learning a single concept from a sequence of examples. In repeat learning the teacher chooses a series of related concepts randomly and independently from a distribution D. A nite sequence of examples is provided for each concept in the series. The learner does not initially know D, but progressively updates a posterior estimation of D as the series pr...
